What is Cellulite — and Can Anything Be Done About It?

Do you avoid looking in the mirror because of those ugly bumps on your backside? Are you embarrassed to wear shorts because of the dimply look on your legs?

If so, you’re not alone.

Even if you don’t have “thunder thights,” so to speak, you could very well find that you have cottage cheese like bumps on the backs of your thighs, rearend and sometimes on your arms.  This condition is known as cellulite.  At least 80% of the female population has this problem.

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is the dimpling of the skin and is often found on the thighs, buttocks, abdomen and sometimes upper arms of women.  In rare cases men have exhibited cellulite in these areas, but it is much more common in women, particularly post-pubescent women.

Doctors and researchers have different theories about what causes cellulite, but there is no conclusive agreement on exactly what cellulite is or how to fight it.  Some experts believe that it is directly related to estrogen.  Others, however, argue that the causes of cellulite might have to do with metabolism and genetics.

Are There Treatments to Reduce Cellulite?

Even though there does not seem to be a definitive answer about what causes cellulite, there are successful treatment options available.  One of the most common treatments available is cellulite cream, such as Revitol or Avotone.  These anti-cellulite creams are available at your local pharmacy or online, and are as easy to use as that favorite bottle of lotion you have sitting on your bathroom countertop.

The difference between creams specially formulated to fight cellulite and that bottle of lotion are the ingredients.  Lotions usually contain lanolin, but do not necessarily the ingredients proven to firm skin.  Caffeine is considered an ingredient that can tighten skin which is why it can be found in cellulite reduction lotions.

Exercise and other options are available to reduce cellulite.

Although no one is quite clear on what cellulite is and how it can be reduced, there are many cellulite treatments available.
