Does Cellulite Happen to Thin or Overweight People?
Cellulite is estimated to happen to over 85% of women. It is the unsightly bulges, dimples and lumps that cause the ‘orange peel’ or cottage cheese looking skin over the thighs, stomach, upper arms and buttocks. These dimples and bumps are caused by subcutaneous fat tissue forced to the surface as the tight connective tissue is forced below.
You might have the perfect weight and still have cellulite. It occurs in both thin and overweight people.
Why Does Cellulite Affect Women More than Men?
Cellulite affects women much more than men. This is because the connective tissue of men are structured differently, their skin doesn’t thin as much as they grow older, and they don’t deposit as much subcutaneous fat as women. The connective tissue in men is structured perpendicular pattern and women have a crisis cross pattern. Not only do women deposit more fat than men to support their unique biological functions, but the estrogen and progesterone released during pregnancy also works to breakdown the collagen to decrease the thickness and firmness of the skin.
Having Cellulite Does Not Necessarily Mean You’re Overweight.
Cellulite is usually associated with women and men who are overweight but the truth is that it can affect women and men of any weight. Being thin doesn’t stop the dimples from occurring.
In many cases, cellulite is a result of poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy habits and genetics. Other causes of cellulite include estrogen from either birth control or natural production. It can be caused by sluggish circulation after an injury, dehydration, alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, medications, stress and tension, smoking and crash diets.
Cellulite can be reduced with a healthy lifestyle. Some people are unwilling to make lifestyle changes and instead spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars and hope on a cream or procedure to do the magic. Like diet pills, there must also be effort to get a positive result from cellulite reduction creams and treatments.
Although cellulite happens to thin and overweight people, some who are overweight put their hope in liposuction. Unfortunately, this procedure isn’t designed to eliminate cellulite but is designed to get rid of the deeper fat — not the fat near the surface of the skin that causes cellulite.
The Best Defense is a Good Offense.
Cellulite happens to people from all socioeconomic levels. It has no boundaries. Many women who have it feel inadequate and have poor self-esteem because of their body image. Treatments are available but most are not cost-effective. The best treatment is to avoid the triggers as much as possible and prevent what cellulite you can.
